2009, #04, April 15 “Cookies and Milk”

The fourth Taco night has come and gone. It was held at a Mexican restaurant on Atlantic ave full of, well, full of people.

John, Rob, Ken, Brian, Frank and Doug attended. I didn’t write about this meeting but I did call for recollections from the group. I thought at this late date I should just post the recollections and call it a day.

Brian:
things i remember;
doug related his great taco trailer experience outside a toys-r-us
john is on a ross/piloti hunt
we tormented john with that patrick chick
food came and things are a blur
there was talk of a religious ‘experience’ at the apple store
doug looked as though he was about to go up in flames from the hot sauce
robert – and melanie – gave kenny the he-be je-bes with the thumb surgery
at the pie place next door, doug had show-and-tell with his new(est) camera
the waitress was sufficiently harassed
there was a trip in the way back machine to the norm reeves days
and i can’t remember much else..

To which Robert added:
That’s a good list, Brian. I will add that my plate of cookies and milk took me back to being an 8 year old kid.

Brian continued with 3 more emails:
ah – and there you have the title of this months episode. ‘cookies and milk’

and ice cream toppings.

and cameras and guns…

and tea bagging

and milk almost coming out of robert’s nose…

There you have it. I may nominate Brian to replace me has historian should the time arise.

John driving his Mini

Okay this is a little different entry for the Taco Night Blog. No one looks at this page anyway, so why not make it about activities as well as Tacos. After a recent Taco night of less than stellar tacos, It became very clear that taco night wasn’t so much about tacos as it is about getting together. (I knew that of course, but this new venue drove it home.)

So I’m adding more entries and records of activities here on the Taco Blog.

Here’s a clip of John leaving the Queens English car show at Woodley Park in the Spring of 2009. Check out the slide show below. Ken, Robert, John and I headed over to a proper English Pub after this for lunch.

Slide show of the Queen’s English car show.

It’s the middle of March and Taco night is truly on a rampage.  It feels great to see everyone on such a regular basis.

In attendance were: Jeff, John, Robert, Kenn and Doug.  El Burrito Jr was the venue. It was selected by a landslide vote after an alternative in Hawaiian Gardens was proposed by Robert.

Jeff is recovering nicely from Pneumonia, and remains apprehensive over his employment status with LB Unified. He’ll know more on Monday.  Kenny related more fascinating stories about the perspective of his companies executive who are visiting from Great Britain. Our favorite story was when the CFO asked how can we increase sales he’d suggested he hire more sales people and less accountants.  Priceless, you really had to be there to here Kenny tell it.  John has placed the Elise up for sale on the Lotus board and will adjust the price as needed. Robert is enjoying his STi, and didn’t let pass a chance to say I told you so, (regarding his restaurant choice) when the restaurant refused to make an Al Pastor Quesadilla. It was a strange moment that included a blank stare, (actually a stare down) between Doug and a server who appeared to be doing that “no comprende English” thing.  All I wanted was three things that I knew he had, combined.

I have an important link for everyone who loves Tacos.  This fellow goes to Taco stands and even small restaurants and taco trucks and reviews them.  He takes pictures and appears to do a great job.  His site says he’s been at it for 2 years. He really is doing God’s work for us.

2009, #02, Feb 12th

Another taco night and it’s only the middle of February. Cool.

In attendance: John, Rob, Jeff, Brian and myself.

King Taco in Long Beach was the venue.  Mummm good food. Then a visit to Hofs Hut, (mostly for nostalgia) no one really ate their sweets.

Yes Rob I’m am trying to keep this log of our meetings going. Ususally I’d try and post some sort of recap of the nights events, but as time goes by they fade.  I do recall the swimsuit edition give away sponsered by Brian. The magazine is still in my edit bay. I also recall John showing up 30 minutes late in the mini, (which looks marvelous). The Elise wouldn’t start. Jeff had his friends Maxima which he is attempting to unload for her.

2009, #01, Jan 14th

Well it looks like things are picking up. Two weeks into January and we’ve already had a Taco Night.

The SuperMex in Belmont Shores was the venue. Outside of that I don’t know much, since i arrive just in time to see the door of the restaurant being locked. Damn you Dr. Phil!

In attendance were Rob, Kenny, Brian, John and an hour or so of my hungry self.

There was talk of increased frequency for our get togethers. That’ll be nice.

Good to see everyone! Thanks for the Dr. Horrible DVD Brian.

The Final Word on 2008

Okay, so that’s that.  A total of 4 Taco Nights in 2008.

There was also a swell Xmas celebration dinner with many Taco night regulars and a few who seldom make Tiaco Night.

Now this domain has expired. But hold on! I just pressed the button to extend it another year. Not sure why as I’m pretty sure I’m the only one looking at it. Okay lets see what happens.

2008, #04, August 08

Taco blogging has run out if steam. It’s been several weeks since our last meet, and I’m writing this from my phone.
Let’s see, we had burgers of various sizes at a wee place on LB Blvd. It was pretty good.
In attendance were: John, Brian (unofficial co-host, Brian picked venue) Ken, Robert, Frank, John P and Doug.
No doubt we laughed and enjoyed a brew over our gourmet burgers.
Afterwords we went to Hofs on LB Blvd and enjoyed sweets and coffee.
That’s all I remember, from here (several weeks later).
As always we look forward to the next taco night.

The Best Hot Sauce

After our last taco night, John sent me a link to the GringoBandito website. I searched the 818 for a supplier of the fine hot sauce and found only one, out of the way outlet. So I ordered a bottle online, paid for the expedited shipping and then anxiously awaited hot sauce heaven in my home.

Then four days later I try to determine where my order was. I found something on their site that said they ship in 1-3 days after placing an order. Still wondering why I paid extra, I decided to wait a couple more days.

Now it’s been 7 days, my frustration level has peaked. I write THE BEST, concerned customer, what kind of company are you?, letter.

Now get this, I get a response from a blackberry device 20 minutes later. Now mind you it’s about 9:30 on a Friday night and the Hot Sauce customer service people are there for me. They weren’t around for the week prior to ship my order but they’re there now and promising me an extra bottle for my troubles.

It’s Tuesday night and I’m still sweating from the scrambled eggs in cheese smothered in hot sauce dinner I just ate. I love this stuff, the flavors are so fine good I don’t even notice it being hot. The sweat on my forehead is the only clue.

So GringoBandito redeemed themselves in my eyes, bought my loyalty for the price of a bottle of hot sauce, and I’m ready to sing their praises till the cows come home.

2008, #03 4/23/08

A taco recap. It was 2008, our third meeting of the year on the 23th of April.

In attendance this evening were: Ken, Frank, Doug, Robert, Jeff and his guest Scott and of course John. John, arrived last to find his friends had the spaces in the Burrito Junior parking lot.

This week I learned that the tacos at Burrito Junior’s are much larger than their amigos at my local taco shop “Cactus” on Vine avenue a short walk from work. So I personally ate way to much. On top of that the crappy decaf coffee and the cinnamon roll left me with the worst heartburn that revisited me with a vengeance at 5:00 a.m. I’m posting this way after the fact, but I’m pretty sure my stomach hurt till after lunch the next day.

I suppose I may have just missed that heartburn by not eating the cinnamon roll after it nearly came out of my nose when I learned what Robert had said earlier in the evening. Never forget, JOHN CAN NOT RECEIVE text messages. We were reminded of this as John struggled with an apparent wrong number message on his phone.

Dammit, Frank nearly caused me to spray coffee out my nose as well, But I’ve forgotten why.

Perhaps as summer progresses the after dinner, sweets portion, of Taco Night will improve. A motion was made to travel a short distance to a more suitable location but that effort fell flat when it’s author went to the restroom.

Jeff shared with his his stories of taking the Elise to work for a few days. I think I recall he was able ignite a small fabrication and hear it come back to him in a much larger way after only a few hours. His story had crossed the student teacher divide and had been properly exaggerated to mythic proportions. Ahhh the power of a fine car.

Didn’t hear much from Robert, He was at the far end of the table and didn’t have much of a voice. I understand he knows Jeff’s friend Scott, the best.

As always it was a pleasure to see everyone.

Taco on!
